Knox Open Day

LILYDALE & YARRA RANGES WINS KNOX OPEN DAY PERPETUAL TROPHY!!!!!!! - Well done to everybody who competed at the Knox Cross Country Open Day - we have won the Perpetual Trophy for the 6th time in 7 years - a great performance!.

Many thanks to the Knox Centre who again put on a superb day of racing at a great venue.  We had some great results and lots of Team medals - the racing is probably the toughest competition outside of State Championships - so well done.

We now travel to Durham Rd in Kilsyth next Saturday where the Croydon Centre is hosting the day.  Then on the 19th July we are having our Centre Championship Day.  Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each age group for boys and girls.  ALL ATHLETES MUST RUN IN THEIR CORRECT DISTANCE AND ONLY IN ONE RACE.  You must have a minimum attendance of 50% to be eligible for medals. (this means that you must have been at least 6 weeks by the time of the Championships)

Yesterday four of our athletes competed at Albert Park in the Victorian All Schools Road Walking State Championships.  Albert Park was probably the windiest place on earth yesterday. All four athletes achieved PB's in these very difficult conditions - a fantastic effort.  Well done to :-

    Lucas Taylor - 5th

    Hayley George - 4th

    Lee Taylor - 8th

Cross Country Challenge Day

Another very successful Cross Country Challenge / Handicap day was held this morning at Margaret Lewis Reserve.  It was great to see some of the front runners running well when given the chance out in front (let's hope they can take this attitude and confidence into future weeks).  Well done to all those back-markers who tried their best to make up some large head starts.  The sportsmanship and attitude displayed by all athletes was great to see.  Many thanks to Rob Belli for working out all of the handicaps and thanks to the Recorders, Timekeepers, Start / Finish Marshalls, Course Marshalls and Hares.

We now move on to Nortons Park in Wantirna (Melways 72 A2) next Saturday for the Knox Open Day.  This day is part of our Cross Country Calendar and therefore is part of Attendance trophies etc. Our Centre has won the Perpetual Trophy 5 out of the last 6 years.  We expect some major challenges this year from Centres such as Waverley, Casey and Bacchus Marsh.  Every runner counts towards points for this trophy - we need as many runners as possible - please make sure you all come along and participate in this great day of running.  This Open Day is probably the biggest day of racing outside of State Championships on the Cross Country Calendar!!

Congratulations

We had a number of our athletes compete at Bundoora yesterday in the State Championships for Primary School Cross Country.  This race is the premier race for Cross Country for 9 - 12 year olds for the season.  It is the culmination of competing and qualifying through School, District and Zone events.  At States there are 2 races for each age group of around 90 - 100 children.  The "A" race is made up of all those children who finished 1st to 3rd in their Zone and the "B" race is made up of all those who finished 4th to 6th at Zones.

A big congratulations goes to Ryan Patterson and Renee Doggett who both qualified for the Victorian Team to run at the National Championships in Geelong in August.

This is the 2nd year in a row that Ryan has made the Team and the 3rd year for Renee  - these are both fantastic achievements and we wish them all the best in the upcoming Nationals.

We had a number of other children who competed yesterday - a big congratulations to Liam Pickett, Stephanie Butler, Stephanie George, Molly Dixon, Mitch Loaring, Patterson Saunders and Ella Vandevelde (please let us know if we missed anybody) - this is an exceptional number of children from a smallish Centre - well done to everybody

14th June 2008

Cross Country

This season we have introduced allowing athletes to run in multiple races or in races that are not necessarily the correct distance for their age group.  We believe this initiative both encourages athletes to run and also allows running the longer distances as practice for the School events.  This initiative has been successful and is enjoyed by most.  Please be aware that sometimes with new initiatives such as this that there can be some "teething" problems.  One of these problems has been our recording system keeping track of times and PB's when children are running in multiple events in the one week.  Please be patient if we are not immediately aware of a PB.  In 99% of cases we will pick it up for the next week where the Chocolate Frogs will be awarded.  It is not always possible to be aware of the PB immediately after the race.  Please help out the Recorders in this regard.

Cross Country

We are flying in our Race aCROSS the Victorian COUNTRYside.   At the end of week 5 we had visited the magnificent North of Victoria - Barooga etc.  Keep up the great running - we are well on track to make it all around Victoria this season.  A cold, brisk morning greeted runners at Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream.  Congratulations to all runners and well done to those that ran PB's and received the all important Chocolate Frog.  Rob Belli would like to pass on his thanks to all those people who are helping out this year at Cross Country.  The help has been fantastic and from a lot of people.  It is greatly appreciated and makes life easier for all.

Knox Open Day - is being held on Saturday 5th July at Norton's Park in Wantirna - see attached FLYER for details

Thanks to the Croydon Centre for hosting us on Saturday. Cross Country

We had another great turn out for Cross Country this week.  All competitors enjoyed a brand new course at the Lake.

We are again doing our race aCROSS the Victorian COUNTRYside (we add up the total km's run by all competitors each week and plot this distance through as many VLAA Country Centres as we can. In the first 2 weeks we have made it through to Bairnsdale!!

This coming week we are hosting the Croydon & Cockatoo Centres at our challenging Morrison Reserve course.  These days have been a great success in past years and we look forward to more of the same this year.  Could we please have people arriving nice and early so that we can be set up and ready to start on time.  Our start times and determined by when people arrive and register to run!.  We are also looking for some volunteers to run our BBQ for the morning.

Cross Country

Not sure what's happening with the weather!! - more like a Track & Field Day.  Really warm conditions and a tough new challenging course.  We had a fantastic turn out and it was great to see so many new faces joining our Cross Country.  It looks like we are going to have a great season. Many thanks to Rob Belli for all of his hard work in getting our new courses ready.  We are looking forward to our race across Victoria and hope to visit all of the Centres across Victoria

Many thanks to all of the parents who helped out on the day - it was great to see so many Course Marshalls and other parents around the course cheering on the athletes.  A big thanks to our Hares who do a fantastic job leading the younger kids around the course.

From an overall point of view it was great to see so many kids and families using the Morrison Reserve Sporting Precinct (Athletics, Soccer, Dog Training).  The "powers to be" - Council, State and Federal Governments should be continuously reminded of this.  Please do whatever you can from this point of view in order to assist us in our quest in obtaining approval and funding for the development of a New Track, Soccer Grounds and other facilities.

Presentation Night - 5th April 2008

We finished the season in style with a fantastic celebration of our year at our annual Disco / Presentation Night. Thanks to all of the people who helped set up, thanks to those who helped on the night and to those who stayed back afterwards to help clean up.  The night was a great success. One of the highlights of the night was the awarding of Life Memberships to Rob & Melissa Belli.  Another highlight was the fantastic response we had from all of the parents at our AGM -  we now have a much larger Committee with a large influx of "new blood".  This was fantastic to see and it has continued the amazing support we get from our parents.  Full details of the new Committee will be posted soon.  A big congratulations to Michelle Durant who is the new President of the Centre.

Powerpoint Presentation - if you would like a copy of the Presentation please email here info@lyrlac.org.au by the end of this week and we'll have them available at our first Cross Country day.  There will be a small fee of $5 per copy (to cover costs)

Well at long last we got through a Centre Multi Day without any rain.  The competition was great and many thanks to all who helped on the day. Results for each individual event have been posted to the website.  Final results for the Multi Competition will be available when we return on Sat 23rd Feb.  Note : We are using the new Alberta Scoring system.  This system awards lower points than the previous system.  1st place performances will be calculated under the old system as well to ascertain whether or not a Centre Record has been set. Many thanks to Christine Dell for all of her work in calculating these scores - it is a huge job!!

Competition Day Sat 2nd Feb 2008

Our second Free Competition Day was a great success - once again the athletes were able to choose their favourite events or to choose events they will be competing in at Regions.  Many thanks to all of the parents who volunteered their services as Chief Officials - your help certainly makes the day run smoother

Next Saturday is our Centre Multi Event Day - all age groups compete in a Discus, Long Jump, 100m, 800m (shorter distances for younger athletes) and Hurdles.  Points are awarded in each event. The U9 and up age groups will use the new Alberta Scoring system (can be found on the VLAA web site for those that are interested - Click HERE Championships ). The younger age groups use a different scoring system -one that we have developed over the years. The athlete with the highest number of cumulative points in each age group across the 5 events is the winner.  Competition starts at 9.00am sharp!

Reminder : Entries for the State Multi Event in Albury close this coming Saturday. If you require accommodation please see Tania. This is a great social weekend and it is also a great chance for the kids to compete in a State Championship event without the need to qualify through Regions

Twilight Competition - 25th January 2008 (Free Choice Competition)

Our first night back for 2008 was a great success.  We tried running a Free Competition Day for the first time, and despite some initial "teething" problems, the night proved very popular. We were able to offer all events to all age groups and we were finished the last event, the Javelin, by just after 8.30pm.  Many thanks to all of those parents who arrived early to help set up - this allowed us to start at the scheduled time of 5.30pm.

We had 5 Centre Records set on the night. Congratulations to Maddy Dunn - U13G Javelin, Samantha Butler - U13G 800m and a special mention to Brendan Lee who broke 3 Centre Records on the night (a phenomenal effort) - U12B Discus, Shot Put and Javelin

We are running this Program again this coming Saturday morning.  We look forward to many more parents arriving early to help set up (please arrive at 8.00am). We will also be holding the Javelin for U11's through to the Open - this event starts at 8.00am SHARP - if you want to compete in the Javelin you MUST arrive by 7.45am or earlier.  We will make some minor adjustments to the Program (mainly the High Jump - this will be run in Age Group blocks rather than height blocks)

These "Free" choice days are a great help for practice for Regions and we look forward to another successful day this coming weekend.  Once again thanks to everybody who helped out on the night - we really do have great participation from most of our parents.

23rd January 2008

Free Event Choice Days - Normal Competition

We are pleased to announce that our next 2 weeks Centre Competition will be "Free Choice" event days.  Athletes can choose their favourite events. We are providing this opportunity in the lead up to Region Championships to allow athletes to practice their chosen events or for those athletes who are not competing at Regions to simply compete in their favourite events.  Our new points system, that of awarding points based on the 3 best performances in each event for the season, allows us to hold these "Free Choice" event days. (Note : Attendance points are still awarded for these 2 days)

The attached Program outlines the order of events  CLICK HERE.

There is no need to pre-enter events - simply "roll up" to the designated event prior to it's allocated commencement time.  CLASHES IN TRACK EVENTS CANNOT BE CATERED FOR.  If you have a CLASH between a Track Event and a Field Event then the Track event takes precedence.  You will be allowed to return to the Field event at a later time (as soon as practicable after the Track event) to complete the Field event.  ( The exception to this rule is the High Jump - you cannot return to the High Jump and re-commence jumping at the height when you left - you would have to jump at the height that the bar is at upon returning.  Suggestion - if doing the High Jump - do not have Event Clashes)

You can only compete in events that are normally held for your age group, for example an U9 cannot do a 1500m or a Javelin

U6's can do 200m, U7's can do 300m, U8's can do 400m (this is normal for these age groups after Christmas)

Most events will be run in age groups.  High Jump will be held based on heights and not age groups - see Program.  Some Distance races and Walks may have age groups combined.  Javelin will be combined.  Friday night - Javelin will be held at the end of the night - time permitting.  Saturday 2nd Feb - Javelin will be at 8.00am sharp

The success of this new initiative will be dependent upon athletes arriving at the event before the designated time.  We also obviously need to start on time. "Strolling" down the hill at 5 or 10 minutes before the designated start times of 5.30pm on Friday and 9.00am on Saturday will NOT allow us to start on time.  Please continue to support us and your kids by arriving 45 minutes to 1 hour beforehand to help set up and get ready.  There will be a lot more work involved in getting through these Programs - whatever you can do to help will be appreciated - we believe the effort will be worth it to provide the athletes with the opportunity to compete in "favourite" events

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AT THE PROGRAM AND WORK OUT WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING!! BEFORE ARRIVING ON THE DAY

Good Luck!!

20th January 2008

Multi Event Day with Croydon

A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE CROYDON CENTRE - we had a large turn out of athletes to compete at the inaugural Croydon / Ringwood / Lilydale & Yarra Ranges Multi Day.  The day was a great success (despite the persistent rain) and was enjoyed by all of our members.  The day was very well run and the results and medals were all presented within approx. 1 hour of the last event finishing - a fantastic effort.  Many of our athletes won medals and everybody who competed should be congratulated for some great performances in very difficult conditions.  Our younger athletes ran 400m and 600m races for the first time - well done to all of these guys.  We also held a "little kids race" which was enjoyed by many young kids and I'm sure their parents.  We hope that this event can continue in future years - once again thanks to the Croydon Centre and to our parents who helped out on the day.

We have heaps of photos from the day featuring athletes from all 3 Centres - we hope that the Croydon and Ringwood people enjoy them

The rain was great for some.....                                        ........ and the competition was fierce!!

Centre Multi Day this Saturday 22nd December

A glorious night for Little Aths.  Thanks to all of the parents who are helping out - our Competition Days are running really well - all of the help is great!

This Saturday (22/12) is our Centre Multi Day.  Each age group will compete in a Sprint, Distance, Hurdle, Long Jump & Discus.  Points are awarded based on each performance (U9 - U15 we use the VLAA Scoring system). The athlete with the highest aggregate of points over the 5 events is the winner.  Certificates and Ribbons will be awarded (these will be presented in the New Year)

NOTE : Due to the Multi Event Program taking longer to complete (and a possible "special visitor") we have decided to start the Program earlier than usual.  We will be starting at 8.30am (not 9.00am).  If you are late you may miss your first event and the points that go with it which will severely affect your Multi points total. No exceptions / allowances will be made this year for people missing events

Normal Comp and Region Relays

What a weekend!.  A great night on Friday night for our twilight competition - held in hot conditions.  Saturday night saw the "Relay for Life Event" held at our Track

A lot of us then ventured over to Doncaster on Sunday for the EMR Region Relay Championships.  Melbourne dealt up the customary Rain, Wind and extreme Heat (and that was all before lunch!).  Well done to all of the athletes - once again you displayed great sportsmanship and determination.  We had quite a few Teams who made Finals and of these we had some winning Medals.  Some Teams have automatically qualified for State Championships with other Teams in with chances of Progressing - these Progressions will be available from the VLAA in the next week or so.  A big thank you to Susan Taylor for another huge effort in organising everything as our Team Manager, thanks to all of the Coaches, thanks to the Chief Officials and thanks to the parents who carried out duties.

Relays are a great team event and are great fun.  Please remember if you have committed to this event then please turn up - you are letting your mates down if you don't

This week is a Twilight Competition (Friday night).  Please arrive as early as possible to help set up.  This allows us to start on time.  A BBQ will be held - selling hamburgers and sausages.  We look forward to seeing everybody there - the weather forecast is good so it should be a great night

Apologies no Photos this week

Competition Day 2nd November 2007

Our first twilight meeting for the season was a great success.  Thanks to all those parent helpers.  The smoothness of the Program allowed us time to hold a "night time" Javelin for the Open Age groups

Well done to those families and athletes who attended the Caulfield Open Day on Sunday in absolutely atrocious conditions

Congratulations - Blake Petterd also competed at the Primary School State Championships last weekend - well done Blake! - a great performance to qualify for this event.

Club V Club Day

Well done to the REDBACKS who won the Champion Club trophy last weekend in a very close battle with the Mustangs.  Third place went to the Comets with the Jaguars in 4th place.  The day was a great success and all of the kids and parents are to be congratulated on their spirit and sportmanship. The Relays at the end of the day were a highlight with the final result for the trophy going right down to the wire.

Photos from the day will be posted later on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Competition Day 20th October 2007

At last the weather was kind to us.  We had near perfect conditions for our third week of competition.

Our new Hurdles were unveiled for the first time.  These are a great addition to our Centre - well done to all those involved in raising the funds, purchasing and delivering.

It is our Club V Club Day this coming Saturday - this day was a great success last year (despite the weather).  KIDS - make sure you all dress up in your Club Colours - colour your hair, face, streamers, balloons etc

There will be a prize (Athletes Foot Sports Bag Package) for the best dressed athlete from each Club (1 from each Club as judged)

Please get into the spirit of it all.  Athletes will compete in a Distance Race, 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put / Discus and Relays (we'll give as many kids as possible a go in the Relays). Points are awarded and the winning Club receives the Perpetual Trophy. Last year's winners the REDBACKS are keen to go back to back.  Can the other Clubs catch them this year??

Box Hill Relays - everybody had a great day in hot and "dusty" conditions.  Well done to all athletes and parents - once again we all showed great spirit and sportsmanship. Many thanks to the Coaches, Helpers and Team Managers. We can now look forward to Region Relay Championships in a few weeks time.  Check with your Coaches as to when training for Relays is being held.

Our 2nd day of competition saw Race Walking introduced to our Centre on an official basis for the first time.  The event was a great success with the kids having great fun trying to master this new event.

Cold blustery conditions greeted us for our 2nd day of competition (hoping for good conditions soon!).

Modifications were necessary to our Program - no Hurdles or High Jump

The Box Hill Relay day is being held this Sunday for the U9 to U15 athletes.  Events start at around 9.00am and basically go all day. Speak to your Coach to ascertain which events you are competing in.  This day is great fun and is a great warm up for Region Relay Championships.

Training for relays will be held this Wednesday starting at 4.30pm for some age groups - please check with your Coach to verify times

Novel way to beat the cold!!

Parent help - one again it was fantastic to see so many parents helping out with our competition and Canteen.  This help really makes the day a lot easier to run and is more enjoyable for everybody.  Last season's introduction of Event Managers on the various events has been a great success and we thank those parents for their commitment and energy. Remember there are various Officials Clinics commencing on Wed 24th Oct - we already have a good number of enrolees - please give it some consideration - information -  HERE!!.

Our Centre Handbook was distributed on Saturday - this Handbook contains all the relevant information you need for Little Aths - including information such as Centre Records, Award Winners and Achievement Levels

Opening Day

We had a great turn out on Saturday for our first day of competition.  It was great to see a lot of new faces and many returning members for another season of Family Fun & Fitness.

Thanks to all of the parents who helped out on the day - we really do have great support from the parents. It was great to see some newer parents taking on Chief Officials roles (this places our Centre in a strong position on competition days as we no longer rely on a few individuals).  We have 16 attendees already registered at the upcoming EMR (Easter Metro Region) Officials Training Clinics - there is plenty of room for any other interested parents - information HERE!!. Please give it a go - they are a great way to learn the basic rules of events - great for your kids and great for your understanding of the events

Relays - for U9 and up age groups.  A Newsletter was handed out to all athletes on Saturday.  There will be general training for relays on Wednesday night (5pm).  Separate sessions will then be organised for individual age groups once numbers are known.  Relays are great fun and a great team event.  Participants compete at Box Hill Open Day (Sun 21st Oct), Regions (Sun 18th Nov) and in some cases in State Championships at Olympic Park - please give it a try

State Championships - Lardner Park

All of our athletes ran magnificently on a deceptively "tough" and challenging course.  A huge congratulations to our medal winners - GOLD - Ryan Patterson U9 Boys, SILVER - Zak Patterson U12 Boys and our U15 Boys finished their Little Aths careers in style with a SILVER Teams Medal.  Other FINALISTS (top 8 finish) were Connor Thrall - 5th U7 Boys, Renee Doggett - 5th U11 Girls, Samantha Butler - 7th U12 Girls and Alex Huser - 8th U15 Boys.

Once again a huge thanks to Susan Taylor for her work as our Team Manager for the day.  There is a great deal of work involved and it wasn't until about 5pm when Susan finally got to leave Lardner Park. Susan was ably assisted by Harry Braun and Melissa Belli.  Thanks also to all of the parents who carried out their duties.  Finally a big thank you to Tania Doggett for all of her fantastic photos (Tania probably covered more distance than anybody on the day running to each point to get the photos)

We now move on to the final events of the season - The Hills Challenge in Cockatoo (see info at top of Page) followed by our gala Bush Dance / Presentation Night - hope to see you all there.
